AN INTERNATIONAL POETRY JOURNAL IN ENGLISH & CHINESE
An international poetry journal in English and Chinese, Pangolin House features contemporary work, appearing bilingually with selected art or photography. Based in the U.S. and Taiwan, Pangolin House seeks to honor aesthetic and literary excellence from east and west.
Pangolin House editors George O’Connell and Diana Shi are deeply grateful to have been honored with two U.S. National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowships in Translation for our work with Chinese poetry since 2006. In 2014, for From Here to Here: New & Selected Poems by the eminent Chinese poet Lan Lan, and in 2022 for Impossible Paradise: Selected Poems of Chen Yuhong, one of Taiwan’s leading women poets. Both are featured in Pangolin House. Our translation philosophy is available on NEA’s “Art Talk”.
Pangolin House is also pleased to have received a Creative Writing Translation Award, as well as a Publication Award from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Both were fundamental to creation and publication of Crossing the Harbour: Ten Contemporary Hong Kong Poets.
Our editors’ Darkening Mirror: New & Selected Poems by Wang Jiaxin, released from Tebot Bach with a foreword by U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass, was shortlisted for the 2018 American Literary Translators Association Lucien Stryk Award.
During a U.S. Fulbright fellowship to Natl. Taiwan Univ., the editors conducted a semester Creative Writing Poetry Translation workshop rendering contemporary Taiwan poetry. The fruits of this effort, Passages: Thirteen Contemporary Taiwan Poets, appeared bilingually in spring 2022 from Bookman Books, its publication kindly assisted by Taiwan’s National Culture and Arts Foundation.
